“OK, I do a music show on station WBCR- I play a little bit of ALL kinds of music. During our recent fund drive, a young woman walked in one afternoon, gave us a donation check, and dropped off a couple of her new CD's. So I played one track on the air and I was pretty blown away - and I don't say that lightly. I'm VERY fussy about what I play on the air, and I have very high standards when it comes to the current crop of young singer/songwriters. I find a lot of them to be whiny and sort of dull, musically… Well, one thing led to another and I asked Sarah Jane to come back to the studio that night with her band. So here they come...they all crowded into our tiny radio station control room, with our microphones stretched out as best we could towards the instruments - one hand drum, acoustic guitar, and acoustic bass. No wires, no electric instruments, no amps and no effects. So I'm at the control board, and I ask them to play a little sound check so I could get some levels on the instruments, but it never happened. Instead, the Just Jane Band launches into "Isabelle", the single off their CD that I had played on the air a few hours earlier. And in about 30 seconds they were ROCKIN' the station. Like I said, even though I have very broad musical tastes, I'm pretty fussy about the music I put on the air. Well, this band was SUPERIOR to 95% of what I've heard lately -- I mean it. Sarah Jane Hebler is not only a powerful singer, but also a subtle one with a lot of emotional and musical range. I hate comparisons, but I guess I could say I heard the power of Joan Jett, the emotional maturity and big voice of Kd Lang, and the songwriting sensibility of Meg Hutchinson. Oh, and by the way, the band was way cool. If these guys can generate that much heat totally unplugged in a 10' by 10' room, I can only imagine what they'll do when they get to really stretch out. I can't wait to see this band live, doing a whole set or a whole night somewhere. They are that good.”
